Behind the stories

Hello, I’m Jesni.

Australian indie author. Lover of fantasy, complicated characters, strange worlds, old gods, morally questionable decisions, and the occasional bookshop that has opinions of its own.

My stories tend to begin with a simple idea. Then somebody opens a door they probably shouldn’t. Before long there are ancient gods, forgotten histories, vampires, pirates, creatures nobody has properly named yet, and characters who have completely ignored whatever plans I originally had for them.

I write fantasy worlds filled with people who are imperfect, stubborn, frightened, funny, and occasionally spectacularly bad at making sensible decisions. The Coil’s Embrace began one journey. The world of Eldria opened another.

Writing differently

I’m also dyslexic. For a long time, writing a novel seemed like the sort of thing other people could do. Then I did it anyway. Dyslexia affects the way I work, but it has also taught me that there isn’t one correct way to be a writer. I build stories visually, chase ideas down unexpected paths, rewrite relentlessly, and sometimes discover that the strange little idea that wasn’t supposed to matter has become an entire world.

My books aren’t created by following a perfect straight line. Neither am I.

Beyond the books

This website is more than a bookshelf. It’s a place where I can open the doors to the worlds behind the novels: characters and places, artwork and maps, letters and diary entries, and the artists and indie authors whose work I enjoy and want to share.
